New Orleans Thanks You
Anges d'orage,  our  Storm Angels

In 1966, the Arno River left its banks inundating Florence, Italy, and much of the art in the city.   As word of the flooding spread, volunteers from across the globe came to Florence to help save the masterpieces.  These volunteers became known as the "Angeli de Fango" or "Angels of Mud" for once the river receded, the city and artwork was covered with mud.

With homage to our French Heritage, you are our "Storm Angels" or "Anges d'Orage".   To just call you volunteers is an understatement.  You are much more than that.

Here are some comments from our anges d'orage and what it has meant to them to come volunteer and help rebuild the Gulf South and New Orleans.

Anges d'Orage Jeff Daiker

Volunteering in New Orleans taught me about hard work and even more about hardship and how others respond in the face of hardship. I saw first hand efforts of many people coming together for a good cause of helping others who were stuck by tragedy. I saw pain, but I didn't see misery. Pastor Jones and others involved have one mind sight and that is to rebuild their community physically and emotionally. I commend Rebecca and Marya for initiating the reconstruction and mental health efforts and feel pride and privileged at being a part of it.

In the work that we have done in New Orleans, I have been able to witness such strength and determination to rebuild their homes and community

I am a Volunteer with the River of Hope Project. I am one of 430 Volunteers that traveled from Minnesota and 8 other states. I Volunteered the last trip that River of Hope was in New Orleans. On that trip we finished 5 homes for the elderly that were started the previous trips in the Ninth Ward. The River of Hope was able to work with Pastor Jones of New Salem Baptized Church on Alver street to rebuild that Church. The Church became the base and meeting point for Pastor Jones to give updates and what was needed most. I am one of many people who are waiting to here good news about the grants so we can continue with mental health in the Ninth Ward. Also hopping that the day care center and women's shelter that we gutted and worked on opens before we run out of funds. It will be wonderful when the help arrives so that we can finish what we started.

Our Volunteer work has been such an encouragement to every one of us, and grateful for the opportunity to help.

I had the honor of traveling to New Orleans in August 2006 to help with the rebuilding after Katrina through "River of Hope". It was truly an inspiring experience hearing the stories of the people of New Orleans as they spoke of what they had gone through. I am very grateful to have been given the opportunity to help these individuals and have this experience to take with me for the rest of my life.

I was honored to be given the opportunity to volunteer in New Orleans through "A River Of Hope". When I got to new Orleans and saw the level of disasters, it brought me back to what I had experience in my own country, Liberia. I could identify with the people of New Orleans losing everything they had worked so hard for but, what touched my heart more than anything was how people from all over the country came together to help rebuild the people's homes and lives. I thank God for pastor Jones who is not only helping with the material loses, but also the spiritual which is so important. Thanks for this site and for everything you do to help rebuild New Orleans.

Merci to all "Anges d'Orage".  If you would like to share you volunteer story, email contact@neworleansthanksyou.com
